Two prominent actresses, Judi Dench and Sian Phillips, have become the first female members of the London men's club, The Garrick Club.

Dench and Phillips are the first women to become members of this private club in its 193-year history, after 60 percent of the club members voted in May to admit women.

The Garrick Club, founded in 1831, has faced increasing pressure from members demanding reform; previously, women were allowed to enter the club only if they were invited and accompanied by men.

Judi Dench, 89, and Sian Phillips, 91, were given fast-track memberships last night, joining other prominent actors such as Brian Cox and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Their membership was accepted following a legal review of the club's rulebook by David Pannick, who decided there was no reason to exclude women, The Guardian reports.

The Garrick Club can accept up to four new members a year if its committee so desires. But the normal process can take two to five years, meaning women could only be admitted by 2026.
