Prices for rare colored diamonds have skyrocketed by 205% over the past two decades, driven by their exceptional rarity, growing global demand, and heightened interest from collectors and luxury fashion houses. This is according to a new report from the Natural Diamond Council, prepared in partnership with Choron Group and the Fancy Color Research Foundation, as reported by Robb Report.

Vivid diamonds make up only 0.01% of all natural diamonds mined and come in shades of pink, blue, yellow, green, and even red. Since 2005, pink diamond prices have surged nearly 394%, blue diamonds by more than 240%, and yellow diamonds by almost 50%. On average, prices increase by 5.7% annually, according to data from the Fancy Color Research Foundation.

“Fancy color diamonds embody passion, individual style, and timeless value. No two stones are alike,” said David Kellie, CEO of the Natural Diamond Council. “These gems represent more than jewelry — they are a vivid legacy of Earth’s natural power and beauty.”

It’s no surprise these stones are auction stars and key highlights of high jewelry collections. In May, Sotheby’s Geneva sold Mediterranean Blue — a 10.03-carat fancy vivid blue diamond — for $21.4 million, or $2.1 million per carat. Last month, Christie’s New York fetched nearly $14 million for Marie-Thérèse Pink — a 10.38-carat pink diamond linked to Marie Antoinette.

Auction catalogs increasingly feature a wide range of colors and sizes. For example, Sotheby’s New York recently offered a 5.02-carat pink diamond ring (estimated $1.5–2 million), a 2.02-carat vivid blue diamond ($1.4–1.8 million), and a 26.19-carat fancy vivid yellow stone ($750,000–$1 million).
