‘More than two decades after The Passion of the Christ became a global phenomenon, Mel Gibson is officially bringing its long-awaited sequel to the big screen — and this time, it’s arriving in two parts.

According to the film’s official Instagram account, Part One of The Resurrection of the Christ will hit theaters on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, while Part Two is scheduled for release on Ascension Day, May 6, 2027 — a symbolically loaded choice for a project rooted in Christian faith.

The 69-year-old director has been teasing a sequel for years, but only now has the project entered the final stretch. Gibson emphasizes that the resurrection of Christ is not a single moment in time but a deeply spiritual and philosophical journey that deserves an equally expansive cinematic treatment.

“It’s not just an event that’s listed in the title — it’s something much more profound. To understand what it means, you have to show everything that surrounds it,” Gibson told Stephen Colbert in a 2016 interview.

He has also hinted at a highly ambitious narrative approach, saying the film will “weave through time, space, and spiritual dimensions,” and described one of the two drafts of the script as “a bit of an acid trip,” featuring fallen angels, hell, and otherworldly realms. In his own words, it will be “a little sci-fi.”

Production Timeline & Locations

Filming is set to begin in August 2025 at Rome’s legendary Cinecittà Studios, as well as in stunning southern Italian locations, including Matera, Altamura, Ginosa, and Gravina di Laterza — many of which served as the backdrop for the original film.

Cast Returns

All of the key cast members from The Passion of the Christ will reprise their roles:

• Jim Caviezel as Jesus Christ
• Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene
• Maia Morgenstern as the Virgin Mary
• Francesco De Vito as the Apostle Peter

Caviezel has been building anticipation since as early as 2018.

“There are things I can’t talk about yet — they’ll shock the audience. This could be the biggest film ever made,” he said in an interview.

Box Office Legacy

The Passion of the Christ was the fifth highest-grossing film worldwide in 2004, earning over $600 million globally on a $30 million budget. It remains the second-highest-grossing R-rated movie in U.S. history, behind only Deadpool & Wolverine (2024).

Despite its box office success and cultural impact, the original film received three Academy Award nominations — for cinematography, original score, and makeup — but won none.
