Armenia is poised to become a premier destination for lovers of wine, culture, and travel. On August 15, the Khachkar Park will host the launch of Enofest Armenia, a vibrant wine festival that also includes a scientific and cultural platform, EnoTalks Armenia. Organizers promise not just a colorful celebration but a bold step into the future of the country’s enotourism industry.

“Festivals play a vital role in Armenia’s economy, especially in tourism,” said Lilit Grigoryan, co-founder and creative director of Enofest and EnoTalks Armenia. “They not only promote our culture, traditions, and cuisine, but also actively contribute to economic development.”

One of the festival’s highlights will be a dedicated tasting zone showcasing Armenian and European wines. Wine expert Mariam Sagatelyan will lead guided cross-tastings, while guests will also be invited to participate in a unique wine-painting experience. Bottles personalized with special labels will be available for guests to take home.

According to the Armenian Tourism Committee, festivals are becoming an increasingly important factor in attracting visitors to the country. Tourists are not only attending events — they’re returning and recommending them to others.

“We’re focusing on diversifying our festival offerings,” said Anahit Mkrtchyan, head of the tourism department at the Ministry of Economy. “Our strategic plan includes support for as many festivals as possible, especially in the regions. We’re putting special emphasis on developing cultural, gastronomic, and adventure tourism.”

Grigoryan added: “If we look at global enotourism figures — such as the 2024 Global Enotourism Report — we see that 14% of global tourism growth is linked to wine. It’s crucial that Armenia claims its share of that.”

She emphasized that Armenia already has everything it needs: ancient winemaking heritage, rich gastronomy, natural terroirs, and a unique culture. What remains is to present all this effectively to the world.

The festival will offer a holistic enotourism experience, according to Nazeli Hayrapetyan, public relations lead for Enofest and EnoTalks Armenia. From academic conferences and panel discussions to culinary masterclasses and exhibitions, the program will feature museums, producers, charities, and artisans — including those with disabilities presenting their crafts.

Dedicated areas will include art installations, children’s spaces, theatrical performances, live music, and educational lectures. Organizers stress that the festival is designed as an integrated experience where wine, culture, art, and tourism enhance rather than compete with one another.

But Enofest is just the beginning. Plans are underway to launch the Global Wine Tourism Academy, an educational platform aimed at professionalizing Armenia’s enotourism sector. “We want to build this academy and, together with the state, develop a responsible and sustainable approach to wine tourism,” Grigoryan said.

Meetings with government bodies and private stakeholders are also planned to develop a clear strategy for positioning Armenia on the global wine tourism map.

Visitors can expect to meet winemakers, tour operators, students, educators, industry professionals — or simply enjoy the cultural celebration and raise a glass to Armenia’s future as a wine tourism hub.
