A new study published in the British Journal of Psychology shows that attractiveness isn’t just about symmetrical features or “perfect” looks. Personality traits, tastes, and even subtle cues—like the way you move, your scent, or your voice—play a crucial role, reports NYP.
What the Science Says
Traditionally, researchers believed people are drawn to symmetrical faces, average features, and signs of biological fitness—indicators of health and good genes.
Recent findings, however, highlight a multi-layered view of beauty, where voice, movement, and body scent matter just as much. In the study, 61 participants provided photos, videos, voice recordings, and body scent samples collected via special wipes after exercise.
Researchers analyzed each factor individually and in combination to see what most influences perceived attractiveness:
Voice emerged as the strongest indicator of attractiveness.
Body scent was less significant compared to visual cues.
Combined cues—video plus voice and movement—created the most complete impression of a person.
Five Signs You’re More Attractive Than You Think
Psychologist Francesca Tiggian shared on TikTok five subtle signals that others find you attractive, even if you doubt it:
Raised eyebrows when people see you – a subconscious sign of interest or curiosity.
People go out of their way to help you – an example of the “halo effect,” where attractiveness is linked to positive traits.
Infrequent compliments on appearance – others assume you already know you’re attractive.
Prolonged gazes from strangers – people tend to look longer at those they find appealing.
Surprise at your insecurities – when others notice your self-doubt, they often perceive you more positively than you see yourself.
The study reinforces that true attractiveness is a combination of looks, behavior, and personality, not just physical symmetry.
