Psychopaths and individuals with dark personality traits may inadvertently reveal their inner struggles — and sometimes all it takes is noticing their favorite color.
Researchers have found that people drawn to blue are more likely to face mental health challenges, including depression and psychopathy.
The link between color preference and psychology dates back to 1961, when a study published in the American Journal of Psychology found that over 40% of psychiatric patients listed blue as their favorite color. Modern studies have reinforced this connection. For instance, a 2017 study in China showed that depressed patients preferred cold shades like blue and purple, gradually gravitating toward brighter colors, such as yellow, only after therapy.
Yet blue also has a positive side. According to psychologist Marc Nemiroff of George Washington University, blue is inherently calming, lowering heart rate and reducing stress. Gazing at a blue ocean or sky can evoke stability, safety, and inner balance. But for people with anxiety or depression, the same color may reflect sadness and loneliness. Those who crave control often treat blue as a “psychological security blanket.”
Even psychopaths — often seen as emotionally cold — can experience depressive states. Impulsive, unempathetic individuals still feel inner discomfort and may seek stability through “cool” shades.
An international team of scientists from the U.S. and Asia discovered that a psychopath’s outward calm often masks internal anxiety and impulsivity. This hidden turbulence, combined with dark personality traits, exacerbates suffering rather than suppressing emotions.
Psychopaths commonly exhibit the so-called “dark triad”:
Coldness and ruthlessness (psychopathy)
Manipulativeness and craving for power (Machiavellianism)
Narcissism — a need for admiration and self-love
While they may seem detached, a February 2025 study in the Journal of Research in Personality found that these individuals still suffer from isolation. “The dark triad is closely linked with depressive symptoms,” the researchers noted. People with psychopathic and Machiavellian traits often display signs of depression, while narcissists typically do not.
In short, blue is not just the color of calm. For those wrestling with inner demons, it can reflect hidden anxiety and emotional storms — a subtle signal that beneath the cold exterior lies a complex emotional world.
