Self-Hypnosis offers relief for menopause hot flashes

15:45, November 12

A surprising new approach may help women manage one of menopause’s most troublesome symptoms — hot flashes — without hormones, pills, or creams, according to a study published in JAMA and reported by New York Post.

The study involved 250 postmenopausal women. Some practiced self-hypnosis, while others participated in a control procedure mimicking hypnosis.

The results were striking: after six weeks, women using self-hypnosis experienced 53% fewer hot flashes than the control group.

While traditional hormone therapy is effective, it carries increased risks of breast and uterine cancer, stroke, cardiovascular disease, and blood clots. Non-hormonal alternatives such as antidepressants or lifestyle changes can help but may have side effects or limited efficacy.

Previous research has shown that professionally guided hypnosis can reduce the frequency and severity of hot flashes. This new study confirms that self-administered hypnosis can also be effective, building on evidence of its benefits for conditions like irritable bowel syndrome and chronic pain.

Even the Menopause Society recommended clinical hypnosis for symptom relief back in 2023.

Hot flashes can persist for years, disrupting sleep and daily life — sometimes lasting up to 13 years. Self-hypnosis offers a promising drug-free option to ease these symptoms and improve quality of life.
