Millions in 10 minutes: Donald Trump auctions Jesus portrait at Mar-a-Lago

13:14, January 3

Some people ring in the New Year with a kiss or by eating 12 grapes for luck — others do it with a $2.75 million auction of a live-painted portrait of Jesus Christ, reports Hyperallergic.

During a New Year’s Eve party at Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump hosted an auction for a portrait of Jesus with blue eyes, painted live on stage in just 10 minutes by artist Vanessa Horabuena. The painting began with a bright yellow cross as religious music, including Hallelujah, played in the background.

“There’s a young lady named Vanessa, one of the greatest artists in the world,” Trump told the audience. “She can slowly create a beautiful portrait for the White House, or she can paint the most incredible piece in literally 10 minutes.”

It was unclear what he meant by a “White House portrait.” At the time of the New Year’s Eve event, the artist’s name had not been publicly revealed. Trump noted that Horabuena had previously created portraits for him in the White House and had “replaced a lot of people with those portraits.”

The finished portrait depicted a fair-skinned figure with blue eyes, reminiscent of an AI-generated version of the Shroud of Turin, which Trump called “amazing.”

Before the bidding began, Trump asked his sons, Donald Jr. and Eric, to name their favorite charities. Reports indicate that proceeds from the auction would go to the sheriff’s department and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The auction winner was an anonymous couple, who bid just under $3 million — a dramatic jump from the usual price of Horabuena’s devotional works, which typically sell for $15,000 to $40,000.
