American clinical psychologist Vincent Greenwood has warned that President Donald Trump’s behavior could become even more dangerous, particularly if Republicans suffer major losses in November’s midterm elections. The specialist believes the possibility of invoking the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which provides for the transfer of presidential powers if a president is unable to discharge his duties, should be considered.
In an interview with The Daily Beast, the director of the Washington Center for Cognitive Therapy said Trump displays traits that the psychologist associates with clinical psychopathy, including impulsivity, a lack of remorse and a desire to dominate.
“All of these traits are deeply concerning,” said Greenwood, who has conducted more than 1,700 psychological assessments and has spent several years studying the American president’s behavior.
According to the psychologist, people with pronounced psychopathic traits may act recklessly and struggle to deal with complex problems. He is particularly concerned about what he describes as a lack of guilt and accountability for harm inflicted on others.
“Perhaps the most important and troubling trait is the absence of remorse. Psychopaths lack the internal restraints provided by a normally functioning conscience. They do not experience guilt or shame, and they are not troubled by the suffering of others. They also shift responsibility for the harm they cause onto those around them. I believe this provides grounds, at the very least, for considering the invocation of the 25th Amendment,” Greenwood said.
He outlined his assessment in his book Puppet on a String: Trump Is Ruled by an Ominous Psychological Condition.
Greenwood suggested that a Republican defeat in the midterm elections could prompt the president to take actions aimed primarily at preserving his power and avoiding political humiliation.
“He tends to act quickly without thinking about the consequences. The way these traits might manifest themselves is deeply concerning,” the psychologist said.
White House spokesman Davis Ingle rejected Greenwood’s conclusions and sharply criticized him.
“If someone quacks like a duck, maybe they’re just a Democratic political operative masquerading as a doctor,” he told the publication.
The administration spokesman also accused the psychologist of suffering from what is commonly known as “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”
However, Greenwood’s conclusions do not constitute an established medical diagnosis. The psychologist has not personally examined the president, and the practice of diagnosing public figures without a direct clinical assessment remains a subject of professional debate.
