What your glutes say about your health: study reveals surprising links

21:15, January 5

Researchers at the University of Westminster in the UK have found that the shape of your gluteus maximus can provide important clues about overall health. The study showed that glute muscles change with age, sex, lifestyle, and certain conditions, including osteoporosis and type 2 diabetes, reports NYP.

Using 3D MRI scans, scientists identified distinct patterns: men with diabetes tend to show muscle shrinkage, while women may have enlarged glutes due to fat infiltration, suggesting that male and female bodies respond differently to the same condition.

Why It Matters

The glutes are among the largest muscles in the body and play a key role in metabolic health. They help regulate blood sugar, support posture and balance, and protect the lower back, hips, and knees.

How to Strengthen Your Glutes

Fitness expert Tanya Becker recommends three effective exercises suitable even for beginners:

  1. Quadruped Leg Lifts – strengthen the glutes and entire core.

  2. Clamshells – target the gluteus medius and improve hip stability.

  3. Glute Bridges – strengthen the lower back and glutes, enhancing posture.

Exercises can be done with bodyweight initially and later with added resistance if health allows. Even light training improves glute shape and reduces fall risk.

The study also found that highly active individuals had more developed glute shapes, whereas prolonged sitting and age-related muscle decline led to thinning and functional loss.

Takeaway: Strengthening your glutes is not just about aesthetics—it’s an investment in long-term health.
