The fourth season of Netflix’s hit series Bridgerton has come under heavy criticism following its release on January 29. The new four episodes focus on the romance between Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson), the family’s second son, and Sophie Beck (Yerin Ha).
While some reviewers praised the actors’ chemistry, most found the storyline predictable and “safe.” The Independent wrote, “The Shondaland-produced show, created by Chris Van Dusen, has turned the tropes of period drama into something even more banal. The closest thing to an AI-written romance: plots pulled from classic novels and fairy tales, perfectly symmetrical faces, oversaturated colors.”
TIME also noted that the show’s formula is starting to wear thin. Benedict’s portrayal as an artist and rule-breaker should have been a fresh twist, but the season sticks to a familiar, predictable narrative.
The Guardian added that, while the series exists in its own invented world, “any parallels with Downton Abbey or other shows are superficial.” Critics say the fourth season leans too heavily into fairy-tale clichés, which may frustrate adult viewers.
Variety criticized Benedict and Sophie’s romance: “Their relationship lacks the spark and erotic chemistry that made previous couples exciting. While the characters do and say all the ‘right’ things, the connection isn’t felt on screen.”
The Telegraph jokingly described the plot as “cheesier than any fondue,” and noted that Adjoa Andoh’s Lady Danbury sometimes delivers lines as if speaking to children on CBeebies. ScreenRant added that, while the season is styled as a romantic comedy, its fairy-tale elements (“Cinderella-esque”) clash with Benedict’s rebellious nature, a trait that originally drew fans to him.
Among the few positive notes, Yerin Ha received praise from Looper for shining amidst the departure from London’s high society. Despite less explicit content compared to Season 3, the main couple’s chemistry still delights viewers.
Overall, critics agree the series remains visually luxurious and earnest, but the plot choices are overly formulaic and the romance predictable. Some viewers report a sense of “artificiality” and repetition, noting that the show no longer delivers the shock value that made early seasons so captivating.
