Almost no expats living in Dubai’s luxury enclaves anticipated the Iranian airstrikes that targeted the glittering city over the weekend — but many already had secure spaces designed for exactly such emergencies, reports Daily Mail.

The city’s wealth is staggering: billionaire mansions, influencer pads, and high-end expat residences are often equipped with futuristic safe rooms, reinforced panic rooms, and fortified basements — sometimes costing millions of dollars.

Until now, most of these “residential bunkers” had rarely been used, given Dubai’s low crime rate, where even minor theft carries severe penalties. But hiding from incoming Iranian missiles? That scenario was probably not on the minds of the ultra-wealthy when installing these fortifications.

Until Saturday, Dubai had felt nearly untouchable amid the region’s recent conflicts. Everything changed when Dubai Airport and luxury properties like Fairmont The Palm and Burj al Arab were struck, leaving parts of the city skyline engulfed in flames.

What were originally security measures to protect the wealthy from kidnappings or armed attacks suddenly became crucial — especially as fears of further strikes on the UAE grow.

Sheikh Mohammed’s Bunker

The Zabeel Palace, home to Dubai’s ruling Al Maktoum family, reportedly features multiple panic rooms and an independent power system, allowing the royal family to remain safe for weeks.

Since Saturday, many of Dubai’s wealthiest residents have taken to Instagram to show confidence in Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and the army’s ability to intercept further attacks. The Zabeel Palace itself is considered one of the most fortified residences in the UAE.

In addition to round-the-clock security, the palace includes high-tech, aesthetically designed safe rooms that can be activated at the push of a button, along with an autonomous electricity system capable of sustaining the family in complete isolation for weeks.

Even if the palace becomes a potential target in the event of further escalation, Sheikh Mohammed has remained calm, reportedly spotted strolling through Dubai Mall earlier this week.

Private Residences and Panic Rooms

Most of Dubai’s high-profile private homes feature similar levels of security. One of the city’s most expensive properties, Marble Palace, located in the ultra-wealthy Emirates Hills and sold last year for £86 million, is believed to include multiple bomb-proof panic rooms and a private power substation.

Argus Security, based in a Dubai shopping mall, custom-builds blast-proof and “secret” rooms for luxury homes, intended as hideouts from violent attacks — including close-range assaults with automatic rifles. Today, these rooms can also serve as shelters against nearby missile or drone strikes.

For those without built-in fortified rooms, high-end gyms — often located on lower floors of luxury properties — have become the go-to shelter for the city’s affluent residents.

Even Dubai’s five-star hotels moved guests to secured areas away from windows during the strikes, highlighting how seriously the city’s elite are taking personal safety in an increasingly uncertain region.
