From tech founders and luxury industry moguls to investors and entrepreneurs, the world’s wealthiest represent a wide array of industries and regions. Their fortunes have grown thanks to booming stock markets, AI-driven innovations, and global digital expansion—but this wealth has also increased public scrutiny of extreme economic concentration.
Debates about inequality, taxes, and financial power have made billionaires increasingly controversial figures. Some inherited family fortunes, while others built their wealth from scratch. Often, a person’s birthplace and early environment play a significant role in shaping their path to wealth. This insight prompted the team at PlayersTime to study the geographic origins of billionaires.
The analysis used Forbes’ February 2026 database. Of 3,177 billionaires, birthplace data was available for 1,647 individuals, allowing researchers to identify the cities and countries that have produced the most ultra-wealthy.
When adjusted for population, smaller nations show a higher billionaire density:
Tiny states (population under 1 million) show even more striking numbers: Cayman Islands — 129 per million, Monaco — 53, Saint Kitts & Nevis — 43.
Hong Kong and Singapore are notable not only for their total number of billionaires but also for their concentration relative to population. Mumbai and Moscow also stand out as key cities producing ultra-wealthy individuals.
