Arnold Schwarzenegger has been awarded an honorary doctorate by Ulster University in recognition of his outstanding career and significant contributions to public service, environmental advocacy, and the arts.
For Schwarzenegger, the visit holds special meaning: it was in Belfast that he first competed in a bodybuilding competition back in 1966, at just 19 years old. The university highlighted that the ceremony coincided with the 60th anniversary of his initial trip to Northern Ireland as a young athlete.
Speaking at the event, Schwarzenegger described his return as a “full-circle moment.”
“Sixty years ago, I came to Belfast as a young bodybuilder. I never imagined that decades later I would be back here receiving an honorary doctorate from Ulster University. It feels incredible to be here again,” he said.
The honorary degree also acknowledges Schwarzenegger’s influence on global arts and culture through his film career. The university praised his role in shaping the modern action movie genre and inspiring generations of audiences worldwide.
