Why Chanel’s New “Superman” Bag Worth $3,500 Has Enraged Fans of the Brand

16:32, June 2

“Women think of all colors except the absence of color. I say black has it all,” Coco Chanel once said. The founder of the iconic fashion house lived by this principle until the end of her life. The woman who gave the world the little black dress and structured monochrome suits would likely have been horrified by the brand’s latest release.

In his very first Chanel Métiers d’Art collection, Matthieu Blazy clearly decided to declare war on boredom. Attempting to energize eclectic looks at the intersection of reality and fantasy — drawing on New York mythology, pop culture, and the idea that ordinary city dwellers are secret superheroes — the fashion house embraced boldness, added color, and a sense of playful rebellion.

The main object of attention became the elongated chain-strap box bag, the Long Vanity Chain, from the Métiers d’Art collection. Chanel officially describes its color palette as “blue, yellow, and red” — a direct reference to a superhero who proudly wears these colors, although the name Superman is not mentioned in the release. You don’t need to be a genius to understand who inspired this wildly bright accessory made of lambskin, enamel, and gold-tone metal.

Priced at over $3,500, the bag retains classic Chanel elements: quilted leather, a chain strap, and the iconic double “C” logo. It is literally infused with pop art, but the main feature is a superhero-like shield emblem engraved with Chanel branding, glowing against the trio of primary colors.

The collection’s inspirations span from the 1920s to the 2020s. This playful mood extends far beyond the “Superman” bag and appears on sweaters featuring superhero-style logos redesigned into the double “C.”

Anyone familiar with Coco Chanel’s work knows she likely would have strongly disliked this bag — not because she was against boldness or change, but because her idea of provocation was rooted in minimalism and reduction, while this design represents graphic excess.

It looks like the complete opposite of classic Chanel — timeless, restrained, and unmistakably elegant.

“What is this, Moschino?!”: Internet Reaction

Reddit users did not hold back. Their verdicts were almost as uncompromising as Coco Chanel’s own quotes.

“What is this brain-dead Moschino?” one commenter asked. “What kind of Balenciaga-style nonsense is this?” another wondered.

In fashion subreddits, words like “ugly,” “horrible,” and “stupid” were widely used. However, not everyone was horrified. Some recalled Karl Lagerfeld’s past love for ironic statement accessories. One user noted: “Yes, this is a collector’s item. It’s not for everyone, but that’s the fate of any conceptual art object.”

You can love it, hate it, or call it a total rejection of everything Chanel is supposed to stand for. But people are talking about it. And for a bag disguised as a comic-book alter ego, that’s already half the victory.
