Elon Musk celebrated his 55th birthday last Sunday in perhaps the most on-brand fashion possible for the billionaire.
The Tesla and SpaceX founder marked the occasion alongside his mother, Maye Musk, and Neuralink executive Shivon Zilis, who is the mother of four of his children.
The centerpieces of the celebration were two custom-themed cakes: one shaped like a SpaceX Starship rocket (complete with candles at the base mimicking engine ignition), and the other styled as a miniature moonbase featuring Lego astronauts—a playful nod to the lunar missions Musk has long promised.
Happy birthday to my wonderful son. @elonmusk has given me 55 years of joy.

It’s so much fun to celebrate with family and friends.

Maye Musk congratulated her son on X (formerly Twitter): "Happy Birthday to my wonderful son! @elonmusk has brought me great joy for 55 years. So great to celebrate with family and friends. His cake is a rocket and moonbase."
Eagle-eyed X users were quick to suspect that at least parts of the photos shared by Maye Musk were artificial intelligence creations. The birthday banner and balloons in the background displayed several hallmark flaws typical of AI processing.
According to tech outlet Futurism, two photos appeared on Maye Musk’s account on June 28. One showed Elon blowing out candles on the rocket cake, while the other featured a Lego setup resembling an extraterrestrial colony.
The debate intensified after users spotted a "Made With AI" label attached to one of the images, which subsequently vanished. The internet immediately erupted into an argument over whether the photos were entirely generated by a neural network or if real photos had simply undergone heavy AI filtering during the editing process.
The incident also breathed new life into an old conspiracy theory. Several X users speculated once again that Elon Musk occasionally ghostwrites posts for his mother. To back this up, commentators pointed to a past post on Maye Musk’s account where she was abruptly referred to in the third person.
User reactions in the comments section were blunt:
"Did you seriously AI generate a birthday photo of your son?" one follower questioned.
"This is just sad," another succinctly added.
The situation highlights a growing skepticism among internet users regarding online content. When public figures and high-profile accounts share AI-enhanced or AI-generated images without proper disclosure, it becomes increasingly difficult for the public to separate reality from fiction. Crucially, this confusion is unfolding on the very platforms people rely on for vital real-time information, including weather alerts, political news, and public safety updates.
