Twenty-four-year-old mukbang star Ganfang Yingying has died following health problems that were reportedly linked to extreme eating challenges.
The popular food blogger, whose real name was Chen Ziyi, died on August 17, her parents told the Global Times.
Yingying amassed more than 1.2 million followers on social media through mukbang videos, in which creators consume huge quantities of food while interacting with their audiences.
According to the Daily Mail, the Chinese-born blogger reportedly died after cardiac arrest caused by critically low potassium levels. However, her official cause of death has not yet been announced.
In her final post, the blogger revealed that she had been hospitalized with serious health problems. She said her potassium level had dropped to 2.3, compared with a normal range of 3.5 to 5.5.
Potassium plays an important role in the body, including the proper functioning of the digestive system and muscles. Severe potassium deficiency can cause abnormal heart rhythms, muscle weakness and even paralysis.
Yingying also spoke about the severe physical exhaustion and pressure faced by bloggers who create mukbang content.
“While making money is important, health should always come first,” she wrote.
Doctors later pointed out that overeating alone does not directly cause such a significant drop in potassium levels. Dangerous complications can occur if a person deliberately induces vomiting or takes laxatives after filming in an attempt to get rid of the large amount of food they have consumed.
Yingying was not the first young mukbang star whose life was cut short after extreme food consumption.
Last year, 24-year-old Turkish blogger Efecan Kültür, known for his mukbang livestreams, died. His TikTok account had around 155,000 followers.
Kültür, who suffered from severe obesity, was hospitalized in December 2024 because of health problems related to his weight. By then, he was already unable to get up on his own, was experiencing serious breathing difficulties and was constantly developing bruises on his body. His condition had left him with very limited mobility.
In the final months of his life, Kültür was bedridden and unable to breathe without the help of a special machine. In March 2026, the blogger died at home.
