Two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster made a bold statement during her appearance at the Aspen Ideas Festival. The 63-year-old actress claims that Brad Pitt's box-office hit F1 looks as though it was "made by AI" and that its script was "written by a computer."

"I say this without disrespect—and how could I? The movie made millions of dollars. But when I look at a picture like F1, it feels like it was made by AI," Foster stated. "Doesn't it? I mean, the plot structure precisely follows what you are taught in film school. And the actors deliver lines exactly the way a computer would write them, calculating the perfect words for that specific moment."

"The creators managed to harness technology to build something massive and beautiful, but perhaps most of the information for this project was pulled from other pre-existing sources."

Success Despite Criticism

The sports drama F1 was directed by Joseph Kosinski and written by Ehren Kruger. Brad Pitt starred as a Formula 1 driver who comes out of retirement to mentor and partner with a younger driver (played by Damson Idris).

Despite Foster's skepticism regarding its formulaic nature, the film delivered excellent results:

• Box Office: The film grossed $634.1 million worldwide against a budget ranging from $200 million to $300 million.

• Recognition: The project received four Oscar nominations and took home the statuette for Best Sound.

Real Thrill or Computer Formula?

The irony of the situation lies in the fact that director Joseph Kosinski (who previously directed Top Gun: Maverick) has always emphasized his commitment to using as many practical effects as possible rather than computer-generated ones.

"The audience can always tell the difference between what was shot for real and what was modeled on a computer," Kosinski shared. "Specifically for this movie, we developed a smaller, lighter camera system. We shot scenes right during actual Grand Prix weekends. The shooting windows were incredibly small—sometimes we only had a few minutes for a scene. It was a massive challenge, but that is exactly what infused the picture with an energy and realism that couldn't be achieved any other way."

Furthermore, during the development phase, screenwriter Ehren Kruger brought legendary racing driver Lewis Hamilton on board. The athlete personally reviewed the script, assisted with casting, and oversaw details to ensure that what happened on screen "reflected the real racing world."

Nevertheless, for Jodie Foster, the blockbuster's flawless precision and canonical structure were reason enough to compare the film to the work of neural networks.
