A Billion Dollars for a Broken Heart: The "Divorce of the Century" Nears Its Climax in Seoul

21:31, July 23

The legal battle between Chey Tae-won, head of tech giant SK Hynix, and his ex-wife Roh Soh-yeong is reaching its climax. At stake is the division of a $5 billion fortune and control over the country's premier semiconductor empire, The Wall Street Journal reports.

In 1988, their wedding was the event of the year in South Korea: Chey Tae-won, son of the founder of the SK conglomerate, married Roh Soh-yeong, daughter of the country's sitting president. Newspapers dubbed the union the "marriage of the century." Decades later, the romantic story devolved into a real-life K-drama filled with love triangles, corruption scandals, prison terms, and a battle over a record-breaking fortune.

From Tolstoy Quotes to Out-of-Wedlock Children

The idyll crumbled in 2015 when Chey Tae-won published a three-page letter in a newspaper. In it, he quoted Anna Karenina and publicly confessed that he had long been in love with another woman, with whom he shared a child, and sought a "clean break."

Roh Soh-yeong initially refused to grant a divorce, attempting to preserve the family, but later filed suit demanding compensation. In 2024, an appeals court ordered the billionaire to pay his ex-wife around $1 billion (35% of his assets at the time), plus $1.4 million in emotional damages.

Now, the legal battle is entering its final stretch: Roh Soh-yeong is demanding a recalculation of the settlement, as SK Hynix's market capitalization has skyrocketed amidst the global artificial intelligence (AI) boom, pushing Chey Tae-won's net worth past $5 billion.

Triumphs, Prison, and Friendship with Jensen Huang

As proceedings unfold, the 65-year-old businessman is experiencing the peak of his commercial success. SK Hynix supplies crucial memory chips to Nvidia, and the company's shares have surged nearly tenfold since early 2025. In July of this year, Chey personally rang the bell at the Nasdaq exchange in New York to celebrate SK Hynix's successful U.S. market listing, which raised $26 billion.

However, the tycoon's track record is far from spotless:

Chey has twice been criminally prosecuted for financial fraud and the embezzlement of $42 million. He served multiple prison sentences, receiving presidential pardons on both occasions.

Today, the businessman regularly posts photos on social media alongside Jensen Huang (Nvidia), Sam Altman (OpenAI), and Satya Nadella (Microsoft), while also holding meetings with world leaders.

"Happy Forever!!": Saying Goodbye to the Past

If the court grants Roh Soh-yeong's demands in full, Chey Tae-won may be forced to sell a portion of his SK Group shares, potentially weakening his control over the conglomerate.

Meanwhile, Roh Soh-yeong has been sharing updates with followers on social media showing her moving out of the home she lived in for 37 years. Among her packed belongings, she revealed a childhood poster created by her three children many years ago—featuring photos of her parents with the inscription "Happy Forever!!".
