System Of A Down frontman Serj Tankian claims that his drummer and brother-in-law, John Dolmayan, has grown tired of Donald Trump, despite previously being a passionate defender of the US president.

In an interview with Rolling Stone Italy, the vocalist stated that the drummer's support for Trump should now be spoken of in the past tense, as Dolmayan has grown weary of the president for undisclosed reasons.

"First of all, I don't want to speak for John regarding his political views; that wouldn't be fair. I can say that the verb 'was' [a Trump supporter] is appropriate here," Tankian says. "I cannot say for sure that he remains one to this day. I think he is also tired of Trump, like many others."

He also revealed that in the past, Dolmayan supported Democratic president Barack Obama.

"I'll tell you one thing: before Trump, John voted for Barack Obama. I don't even know if he talks about it publicly, but it's true. People change. I know so many Armenians in Los Angeles who voted for Trump and now regret it. That's all I can say."

Tankian, who once called Dolmayan's support for Trump "disappointing," added that although their differing opinions have at times made their relationship "complicated," they still love each other.

"But I'm far from the only person in the world who has a brother-in-law with different political views," he explains. "That happens to many people. Nevertheless, it doesn't stop us from doing what we actually do: loving each other. We share so much: our heritage, our Armenian identity, our culture, our music, and everything we've created together over thirty years. And that carries enormous weight. Yes, sometimes it's difficult. But times change. Opinions change, too."

In June 2020, amid the Black Lives Matter protests following the murder of George Floyd, Dolmayan called Trump "the greatest friend to minorities" and "the most attacked president in history."

The following month, Dolmayan stated that the Black Lives Matter movement "never had legitimacy" and was a "propaganda tool" for the Democratic Party. In 2022, he claimed that the government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic "always was and remains about money." He later stated that he had lost "hundreds of thousands of fans" because of his views.

In mid-July, System Of A Down wrapped up a stadium tour of Europe, and they are scheduled to perform at the Sick New World festival in Texas in October.
