US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has unexpectedly slammed trendy diets and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s "Make America Healthy Again" (MAHA) initiative. According to the politician, strict food restrictions turn his life into a nightmare, and cutting out sugar nearly drove him to a mental breakdown.
Marco Rubio, alongside his wife Jeanette, appeared on The Katie Miller Podcast to discuss family life, religion, and the secretary of state's eating habits.
The host asked if Rubio had adopted the strict diet of HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., which consists of red meat and fermented vegetables.
"No, that’s crazy. It’s a sauerkraut and meat diet," the 55-year-old Rubio said. "He has to travel with coolers packed with sauerkraut. I’m not going to travel around the world with a cooler of cabbage! That’s ridiculous."
At the same time, Rubio emphasized that he generally supports the MAHA healthy lifestyle movement, but finds it impossible to follow himself.
The politician's wife, Jeanette, immediately exposed her husband's weaknesses, talking about his sweet tooth and especially his love for Pop-Tarts.
"Pop-Tarts are one of the greatest American inventions in human history! When you think about it, they come in this wonderful foil package," the secretary of state joked in defense of his culinary preferences. "He eats everything he shouldn't. Absolutely everything," his wife added. "Anything with sugar, he devours."
According to the politician, suddenly cutting out sugar makes him incredibly angry. When he once tried the trendy keto diet (high fat, low carb), the experience turned into a disaster.
"It was an almost psychotic event for me," Rubio confessed. "Imagine if I were on keto in this position [as Secretary of State]... I'd walk into the office saying, 'Mr. President, we have to bomb Paraguay!' And they’d ask me, 'Why?' And I’d say, 'I don’t know, I’m just terribly angry, I haven’t had sugar in a long time.'"
