Usha Vance remains the "quiet force" who transformed JD Vance into the politician he is today, according to an extensive profile of the Second Lady of the United States published by Vanity Fair.
In the 5,500-word piece, 40-year-old Usha is described as a sophisticated lawyer and mother of four who, since meeting JD at Yale Law School 16 years ago, has served as his personal "guide to the elite world."
"She saw massive potential in JD," a former classmate told the magazine. "She sculpted him into an Acela Corridor product. This isn’t a story about an immigrant; this is a story about meritocracy."
The couple met at Yale, where they quickly became campus favorites. On campus, they were jokingly referred to as "Judusha"—a portmanteau of JD, Usha, and the word judicial.
As noted in an archival student publication cited by Vanity Fair, Usha always had a specific "type": a tall, handsome, conservative 6-foot-4 Marine fit her preferences to a tee.
Although Usha herself declined to be interviewed for the magazine, her friends and former classmates detailed the pivotal role she played in her husband’s rapid ascent from lawyer to senator, and eventually Vice President of the United States.
Her nearly invisible public presence is a deliberate choice. "Like many ambitious spouses of powerful politicians, Usha has learned to operate in the shadows," the magazine notes. Nevertheless, she invariably accompanies her husband on major trips: from a visit to Greenland in March 2025 to peace talks with Iran in Switzerland in June (which she attended while pregnant).
Following her graduation from Yale, Usha built an impressive legal career of her own. She clerked for conservative judges, including D.C. Circuit Judge Brett Kavanaugh and Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts. She also worked successfully at the prestigious law firm Munger, Tolles & Olson before JD entered the political arena.
A Yale classmate described her as the "quintessential ambitious law student" who always strived for top results. However, to embrace her role as Second Lady, she had to step away from private practice. Today, her public appearances focus on MAGA-aligned and family-oriented themes, such as promoting children's literacy.
Usha has already proven she can masterfully handle unexpected situations. When President Trump appeared on her podcast last month to read the children’s book Presidents Play and unexpectedly began improvising, straying from the text to deliver political commentary, the Second Lady maintained absolute, unflappable composure.
By shunning luxury brands in favor of accessible fashion (during her pregnancy, she notably championed a $12 dress from Old Navy), Usha offers a contrast to First Lady Melania Trump, though their relationship remains warm and cordial.
Family friends urge the public not to pity the Second Lady or believe rumors that she has been "silenced." As one source put it: "She made this choice herself."
