Steven Spielberg Honored with Prestigious MoMA Film Benefit Award

15:48, August 13

Famous director Steven Spielberg will add another milestone to his list of accolades: he has officially been named the main honoree of the 2026 MoMA Film Benefit, generously supported by fashion house Chanel.

The annual event celebrates the most influential figures in the film industry while serving a philanthropic purpose—raising funds to support and acquire works for the museum's unique film collection and programs. The star-studded gala will take place on November 12 and will traditionally gather top Hollywood stars in New York City.

The evening's program includes tributes from the director's colleagues and friends, screenings of archival clips from his extensive filmography, and a formal black-tie dinner.

For Spielberg, this event holds special symbolic meaning. As Rajendra Roy, the Celeste Bartos Chief Curator of Film at MoMA, noted, the museum's partnership with the director began more than half a century ago.

"Steven Spielberg’s history with MoMA runs deep, stretching back over half a century to when we helped introduce him to audiences through our New Directors/New Films series in 1974," Roy said. "Since then, he has repeatedly proven that being a true artist and a commercially successful blockbuster filmmaker are not mutually exclusive, though few masters have ever balanced the two with such breathtaking artistry."

Chanel has supported the celebration since 2011 and has served as the presenting sponsor of MoMA’s film department since 2021, highlighting the enduring connection between high fashion and cinema.

Steven Spielberg joins an impressive roster of legendary filmmakers and actors who have received this honor in past years, including Sofia Coppola (who was honored in 2025), Martin Scorsese, Guillermo del Toro, Tom Hanks, Penelope Cruz, George Clooney, Cate Blanchett, Quentin Tarantino, and many others.
