A new candid confession from Michelle Obama about life as an “empty nester” has sparked a heated debate online.
In an episode of her IMO podcast, the 62-year-old former first lady of the United States discussed the challenges of parenthood and the newfound freedom of having grown children with comedian Jon Stewart and her brother, Craig Robinson.
Asked about her daughters — 28-year-old Malia and 25-year-old Sasha — Michelle laughed before delivering a comment that shocked many parents.
“I don’t miss them. I love them, I’ll see them tonight for dinner. I love them, but when they went off to college, Barack was crying, and I was like, ‘Bye.’ Now my Friday nights aren’t filled with that terror and fear of, ‘Where are you? Where are you?’”
Michelle added that she is incredibly proud of how independent her daughters have become since leaving home and said she is enjoying finally having complete control over her own schedule.
A viral clip of the former first lady’s remarks immediately divided internet users and media personalities into two opposing camps.
Many parents openly said they could not relate to Michelle’s perspective. Former The View host Meghan McCain wrote on X:
“I am obsessed with my children. Obsessed. I cried when my daughter started preschool two days a week. When the day comes for them to leave the nest, I will have a nervous breakdown. I cannot relate to anything Michelle Obama is saying.”
Thousands of commenters echoed her sentiment, arguing that worrying about your children and missing them does not simply disappear when they turn 20 or even 40.
Others came to Michelle’s defense, pointing out that the dynamics of a parent-child relationship naturally change as children grow older.
“Wait until your kids are 10–12. College is a vacation for you. The sooner you give them freedom, the sooner they become independent,” one user wrote.
Many others also pointed out that Michelle devoted an enormous amount of time to raising her daughters during and after their years in the White House — and now has every right to enjoy this new chapter of her life.
