Old wounds remain: How the royal family is reacting to the Sussexes’ return

13:29, September 2

Despite Prince Harry’s move back to the UK, a source close to the royal family has told PEOPLE that any reconciliation with Prince William and Kate “will happen very slowly.”

Prince William and Kate Middleton are keeping a low profile amid Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s return to Britain.

While another source previously told PEOPLE that the move gives Harry a “better opportunity” to repair his years-long rift with his older brother, those close to the Prince and Princess of Wales say the couple are taking a wait-and-see approach.

According to the source, William and Kate are resisting any “impulsive reactions” to Harry’s move.

“They’re just watching the situation. It’s all very personal — they don’t feel the need to say or show anything publicly,” the insider said.

The source added that any potential reconciliation “will happen slowly,” as there remains a “deep sense of betrayal” within the family.

Harry and Meghan have been keeping a relatively low profile with their children since arriving in the UK. So far, their return has not resulted in any public signs of a reunion with other members of the royal family.

Prince Harry has previously spoken about his desire to repair his relationships with his relatives. In a BBC interview in May 2025, he said: “I would love a reconciliation with my family. There’s no point in continuing to fight.”
