Goop’s infamous candle with the provocative name This Smells Like My Vagina became an internet sensation — but it was never supposed to be a serious product. According to Gwyneth Paltrow, the candle was born entirely by accident, as a simple joke. The actress and entrepreneur revealed the story on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast.
Paltrow said she was working with creative director and perfumer Douglas Little on a new “earthy” fragrance for her lifestyle brand.
“I love unusual smells,” Paltrow admitted. “I like a woody, leathery profile. Our first perfume was called Church. It’s palladium, with notes of incense.”
According to Gwyneth, while going through various scent samples — ranging from tomato leaves to seaweed — one particular fragrance caught her attention.
“I have a specific sense of humor that not many people know about,” she said. “And I said to him [Little], ‘Well, this smells like my vagina.’ Just as a joke.”
But the perfumer took her comment seriously and thought the idea was brilliant.
“He thought I was being serious, created a candle called This Smells Like My Vagina, and my team bought it. I was sure I was joking, but… the story speaks for itself,” Paltrow recalled.
The actress was quick to clarify that the actual scent had absolutely nothing to do with its name. The candle featured notes of citrusy bergamot, geranium, Damask rose, cedarwood absolute and ambrette seeds.
The product first went on sale in 2020 for $75 and instantly went viral, but three years later the brand decided to discontinue it.
“It became such a phenomenon that we eventually stopped selling it because it was distracting too much attention from our core business,” she explained.
Podcast co-host Benny Blanco admitted that demand for the candle still exists to this day. He said he personally had to pay $600 to resellers to get his hands on the coveted item. Paltrow jokingly responded: “We might have to bring it back.”
Following the runaway success of the experiment, Goop went on to release an entire line of equally outrageous fragrances, including This Smells Like My Orgasm and This Smells Like My Prenup.
