Shailene Woodley sparked a heated debate among fans over her look at the Emmy Awards — nearly a decade after her last appearance on television’s biggest red carpet.

The 34-year-old Big Little Lies star attended the 78th Emmy Awards in a daring Balenciaga ensemble that immediately attracted plenty of attention.

The actress opted for a pale blue top with an extremely plunging neckline and gold sequin-covered trousers. On the runway, the Balenciaga Fall/Winter 2026 look was paired with a black coat, but Woodley chose to ditch the outerwear. Instead, she accessorized with long burgundy opera gloves and a statement gemstone necklace by Howl Jewelry.

She completed the look with slicked-back hair styled into a low ponytail.

The outfit quickly became one of the most talked-about looks on the red carpet. However, the reaction from the public was far from unanimous.

“What even is this — kitchen gloves plus arts-and-crafts projects?” one user sarcastically asked in the comments on Vanity Fair.

“I have so many questions. So many,” another user wrote on X.

Still, the unusual ensemble did have its fans.

“God, I think this look is fun!” one admirer wrote.

Others remained undecided about the outfit. “I have very mixed feelings. All the pieces are beautiful individually, but together they look strange,” one Page Six reader admitted.

There were also plenty of jokes about the actress’s former boyfriend, NFL star Aaron Rodgers. Following his recent comments about their relationship, users decided to connect him to Woodley’s divisive red-carpet look as well.

“Girl, your stylist is a plant sent by Aaron Rodgers,” one commenter joked.

But the biggest moment of the night for Woodley had nothing to do with her controversial outfit. This time, the actress went home not only with her look going viral, but also with the first Emmy Award of her career.

Woodley won Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her role as former Graceland tour guide Annie.
