Saudi Arabia is making a bold entrance into the era of high-performance electric vehicles, unveiling two cars that look more like futuristic concepts than production models. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has presented a sedan and an SUV, the Ceer Exobot — the first models from the kingdom’s new national automotive brand.

Gullwing-style doors, a yoke steering wheel, giant displays and a powertrain producing up to 850 horsepower turn the Exobot into a striking statement of Saudi Arabia’s ambitions to establish itself among the world’s premium automakers.

The arrival of the Exobot is a key part of the Vision 2030 strategy, under which the kingdom aims to build its own high-tech automotive industry. Ceer says both models were developed and engineered in Saudi Arabia and will be manufactured there as well.

The company plans to launch a total of seven models over the next five years. Production will be based at the Ceer Manufacturing Complex, which is being described as the largest automotive manufacturing facility in the Middle East.

The Exobot’s appearance is difficult to mistake for that of a conventional electric vehicle. Both the sedan and SUV feature an extremely low front end that rises sharply toward the rear, a wedge-shaped silhouette, expansive glass surfaces, sharp body lines and a full-width light bar.

Particularly eye-catching are the 32 individual lighting elements — a reference to 1932, the year the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was unified.

The cars were designed by Rob Melville, the former design director of McLaren. One of their defining features is the enormous Shahin Wing doors, named after the saker falcon. Each door is nearly three meters long and opens along a relatively compact arc.

Because there are no conventional B-pillars, the doors create an almost completely unobstructed entrance to both rows of seats. Their imposing size, however, could pose a challenge in low-ceiling garages and some hotel parking facilities.

The interior continues the futuristic theme. A curved 48-inch Digital Horizon display with 8K resolution stretches across the entire dashboard. The cabin also features a separate 10.4-inch central display and an eight-inch screen for rear passengers.

Instead of traditional side mirrors, the Exobot uses cameras, while the vehicle is controlled with a yoke-style steering wheel. The designers have not completely abandoned physical controls, however: dedicated switches are provided for temperature, volume and gear selection.

Another unusual feature is the lower sections of the doors, which are fitted with electrochromic glass. With the press of a button, the glass can switch between transparent and opaque.

The sedan can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.6 seconds, while the SUV takes 2.9 seconds. The claimed NEDC range is around 670 km for the sedan and 560 km for the SUV. The battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in less than 30 minutes.

The Exobot was also specifically developed to cope with Saudi Arabia’s extreme climate. According to the manufacturer, its Halo Cooling system can cool the cabin from around 65°C to 32°C in just 10 minutes.

Solar-reflective glass, an advanced air-filtration system, separate climate-control zones and remote pre-conditioning via an app are also designed to help passengers cope with the extreme heat.

And 850 horsepower is far from the limit. Ceer has already announced a future version producing 1,111 horsepower and around 1,500 Nm of torque. In that configuration, the sedan will be capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 2.1 seconds, while the SUV will do it in 2.4 seconds.

The price, production numbers and launch date for the most powerful version have yet to be revealed.
