Corinna Schumacher, the wife of legendary Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher, has spoken candidly about her life after the tragic accident that happened to her husband nearly 13 years ago.

Corinna is one of the central figures in Netflix’s new documentary, Schumacher ’94: The Birth of a Legend, which focuses on the defining 1994 season in Schumacher’s career. That was the year the German driver won his first Formula 1 world championship with Benetton.

The film chronicles Schumacher’s meteoric rise while also offering a rare glimpse into his wife’s personal life — from the beginning of their relationship in the 1990s to the difficult struggle that began after December 29, 2013.

Corinna remains the main person caring for Michael. She is supported by a team of nurses and therapists who provide him with round-the-clock care. Throughout the years, she has fiercely protected her husband’s privacy and has rarely spoken publicly about his condition.

Corinna’s appearance in the new documentary is one of the rare occasions on which she has opened up publicly about her life after the tragedy.

In the film, Corinna recalls the early days of their relationship and talks about Paula Abdul’s song “Rush Rush,” which once held a special meaning for both of them.

“That was our song back then. When I hear it today, I cry,” she says.

Corinna also reveals that her mother initially strongly disapproved of her relationship with Michael.

“My mother was completely against it. Michael was always at the go-kart track and was constantly pushing other people off the track,” she recalls.

According to Corinna, her mother would often say: “Look at Schumacher! They have a go-kart track at their house, they kick anyone off who does something wrong, and now he’s pushing people off the track too!”

In the film, Corinna also recalls some amusing moments from Michael’s life involving letters from fans. According to her, one young admirer named Jutta regularly sent him underwear along with her letters.

“He received so many letters. And there was one girl who always sent underwear along with her letters. Her name was Jutta. At some point, the phrase ‘Come on, Jutta’ became his catchphrase,” she says.

The documentary does not reveal anything about Schumacher’s current condition. However, Corinna becomes visibly emotional when recalling the events of 1994.

“My heart beats for him when he wins. And when he loses. My heart is always with him. When you are beside someone you look forward to seeing every day, it is wonderful,” she says.

Earlier this year, reports suggested that the 57-year-old Schumacher was no longer bedridden. According to sources close to the family, he is now able to sit in a wheelchair.

The family, however, continues to guard his privacy extremely carefully. After suffering a traumatic brain injury in a skiing accident near the French resort of Méribel, Schumacher has almost completely disappeared from public life.

Attempts by some former employees to sell photographs of the driver in a severely debilitated condition resulted in criminal convictions last year. Reports claiming that Schumacher was expected to attend his daughter Gina’s wedding in 2024 were also never confirmed.

Over the years, numerous rumors have circulated about the athlete’s condition. Among other claims, it has been suggested that he could be in a state of pseudocoma or suffering from locked-in syndrome, in which a person remains conscious and fully aware of their surroundings but is almost completely unable to communicate or respond except through eye movements.

However, as the publication notes, several sources have also disputed that version of events.

In the 2021 documentary Schumacher, Corinna spoke about her husband’s continued presence in the family’s life.

“Michael is here. He is different, but he is here, and that gives us strength. I believe that every day he continues to show me how strong he is,” she said.

“We live together at home. We do therapy. We do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he is comfortable. And we simply try to make him feel our family, our connection. We try to carry on living as a family — the way Michael loved it and still loves it. And we keep moving forward.

“For me, it is very important that he can enjoy his private life as much as possible. Michael always protected us, and now we are protecting Michael.”
