Sylvester Stallone, who recently turned 80, has opened up unexpectedly candidly about love, regrets, family, and his fear of aging. The Rocky star admitted that he only truly understood what love meant when he was in his 70s, and now he is trying to make up for lost time.

In an interview with The New York Times’ The Interview podcast, timed to the release of his memoir, the actor looked back on his life and acknowledged that not all of the decisions he made brought him happiness.

According to Stallone, a genuine, all-consuming feeling came to him much later than he could have expected.

“To really, unequivocally understand what true love is — that complete surrender, that reckless kind of love where you’re willing to jump into a volcano for another person — that came to me late,” the actor admitted.

He described it as one of the greatest regrets of his life. Stallone said that when he was younger, he was too focused on his career and on escaping the poor neighborhood where he grew up.

“It was so important to me not to become another failure from my neighborhood,” he explained.

Stallone has been married to Jennifer Flavin since 1997. The couple have three daughters — Sophia, Sistine and Scarlet. In 2022, the couple briefly separated, but they soon reconciled.

Today, the actor admits that he looks back on his past with regret.

“I built a castle out of thousands of stones made of regrets,” he said, describing his life in metaphorical terms.

Stallone said he is now trying, at least in part, to make amends for his mistakes and devote more attention to the people who genuinely need him, as well as to his children, who will eventually have to build lives and legacies of their own.

At the same time, the 80-year-old actor does not hide the fact that he feels the passage of time acutely. According to Stallone, insurance companies put the average life expectancy at around 78, meaning that he now sees himself as someone who is living “on borrowed time.”

Yet even that feeling does not make Stallone want to give up on love or memories.

“It’s never too late to fall in love, it’s never too late to dance with the beautiful memories you’ve had, and not sink into the most terrifying swamp of all — the swamp of loneliness. That is truly a premature burial,” the actor said.

Stallone also admitted that he remains deeply anxious about his age.

The actor was equally candid in assessing his own role as a father, acknowledging that his career often took priority over his family.

“I really wasn’t a good parent. My wife Jennifer is the greatest woman in the world. She is incredibly selfless,” Stallone said.

Stallone also recalled his first marriage to Sasha Czack, which lasted from 1974 to 1985. The former couple had two sons, Sage and Seargeoh.

Sage died in 2012 at the age of 36 from an undiagnosed heart condition. The actor admitted that the tragedy became one of the most painful experiences of his life.

“You don’t get over it. You don’t get rid of it,” Stallone said of losing his son.
