Michael Douglas’s stubble left Sharon Stone with a rash: shocking details from the filming of Basic Instinct

11:43, October 8

Michael Douglas has lifted the lid on some of the most controversial moments of his career, revealing unexpected details about the making of the iconic erotic thriller Basic Instinct.

In 1992, the 82-year-old actor starred opposite Sharon Stone in the film, which became an instant box-office hit but was also one of the decade’s most controversial productions because of its scenes of violence, sex and nudity.

In his new memoir, One Helluva Ride, Douglas reveals that filming an intimate scene with Stone left the actress with severe irritation and a rash on her upper thigh.

“Sharon and I agreed that we wouldn’t use body doubles,” the actor recalls of the scene, which took a total of five days to film.

According to Douglas, Stone initially covered her intimate area with a modesty patch, attempting to preserve at least the appearance of modesty. Eventually, however, she decided to get rid of that as well.

“She said, ‘Enough pretending. I’m naked, we all know it. Let’s just shoot it for real,’” Douglas writes.

The scene depicted a passionate encounter between their characters. However, despite how intimate it appeared on screen, the actor stresses that there was no actual sexual contact between him and Stone.

“Despite how it looks in the finished film, I can assure you that Sharon and I did not actually have sex in that scene,” Douglas writes.

At the same time, he had to remain extremely close to the actress’s body to make the scene look as realistic as possible.

At one point during filming, Stone complained that Douglas’s stubble was hurting her.

“After several takes, Sharon said, ‘Please be more careful. Your stubble is really scratching me!’”

Douglas took a closer look and noticed that the actress’s upper thighs were “completely red and chafed.”

“I felt terribly embarrassed and sorry for her,” the actor admits.

For the role, Douglas lost around 24 pounds, but he had warned the producers beforehand that he would not agree to a fully nude scene.

Stone, by contrast, agreed to full nudity in a sequence that would later become one of the most recognizable moments in cinematic history.

During the famous police interrogation scene, her character, Catherine Tramell, sits across from the detectives in a short dress without underwear and slowly crosses and uncrosses her legs.
