Prince William Pulls Funny Face Outside Buckingham Palace: What Made the Future King Laugh

15:16, October 14

Prince William surprised onlookers with a funny gesture while greeting fans outside Buckingham Palace. The heir to the British throne not only joined sporting stars for a game of cricket but also took part in a playful football ritual with a stranger who turned out to support his beloved team.

The 44-year-old Prince of Wales unexpectedly joined a cricket match on The Mall in London. Tourists and locals gathered to watch the game ahead of the Changing of the Guard ceremony outside the palace. William was joined by several well-known cricketers, including former England captain Joe Root and former India captain Ajinkya Rahane.

According to The Telegraph, William proved to be “a pretty good batsman,” although his bowling could use some improvement. “He played some great shots. There’s definitely potential,” Root said in praise of the prince.

During breaks in the game, William chatted with the crowds, shook hands and posed for photos with fans. The funniest moment came when he met a supporter of Aston Villa, the football club he has followed for many years.

“Can you do the glasses celebration?” the prince asked, referring to the signature goal celebration of Aston Villa captain John McGinn. William turned his palms outward and arranged his fingers to resemble a pair of glasses, prompting the fan to copy the gesture.

“That’s a good man!” the prince responded approvingly.

The gesture has a special meaning. McGinn dedicates it to his nephew Jack, who has a visual impairment and wears specially designed protective glasses when attending football matches. Through the celebration, the footballer hopes to show his support for his nephew.

William’s love for Aston Villa is well known. In a 2015 interview with the BBC, he explained that he had chosen the club because he did not want to support one of the most popular teams followed by his school friends.

“I wanted to support a team that could be somewhere in the middle of the table and give me a whole emotional roller coaster,” the prince said.

He is now passing that passion on to his eldest son, 13-year-old Prince George, who often accompanies his father to football matches.

In May this year, William experienced one of the most memorable moments of his life as a football fan when he travelled to Istanbul to support Aston Villa in the Europa League final. The team defeated Germany’s Freiburg 3–0. After the final whistle, the prince celebrated alongside fellow supporters, hugging fans and making no effort to hide his excitement.
