NEWS.am STYLE Exclusive: Sofi Devoyan teaches Armenian folk dance to Conan O’Brien

11:01, October 31

By Shushan Shatikyan

Renowned American television host, comedian, writer, producer, musician, and voice actor Conan O’Brien’s recent visit to Armenia was an important event.

O’Brien’s recently announced the date for his CONAN episode in Armenia, which will air on November 17.

NEWS.am STYLE had noticed that renowned Armenian folk dancer and choreographer Sofi Devoyan was teaching Conan how to dance Armenian dance at the ancient pagan Temple of Garni.

And Devoyan told us how she taught the American celebrity how to dance the Armenian Kochari.

“They told me that he wants to meet me and that we teach him the Kochari,” she said. “I agreed, and we went to Garni.”

To our query as to whether the comedian easily learned the elements of the Armenian folk dance, Devoyan responded: “He was managing, he was dancing in his style, [and] then he began to joke around. (…) [But] he wanted to understand, present the Armenian art to the world.

“He was fascinated, just fascinated. He was amazed by everything—whether the nature, the Temple of Garni, our treatment. (…) He was very satisfied.”
