Aracy Balabanian, the Armenian star of the Brazilian TV series, has died. According to Globo, the actress died yesterday in Rio de Janeiro. She was 83 years old.
Balabanian was born in the city of Campo Grande in the family of Raphael and Esther Balabanyan, Armenian emigrants who had fled Turkey due to the Armenian Genocide in 1915.
At the age of fifteen, she moved to Sao Paulo with her parents and helped raise her seven younger brothers.
Aracy studied at the Escola de Arte Dramatica in Sao Paulo and was also part of the traditional Brasileiro de Comedia theater in Bela Vista.
As per Balabanian, the career of an actress was not considered prestigious for a woman in those days. However, Aracy starred in many TV series during her acting career. But the audience fell in love the most with her role Don Armenia in the 1990 TV series Scrap Metal Queen. She played an overprotective mother of three boys, and her character was inspired by the actress' Armenian heritage.
