Taylor Swift's new favorite cocktail: French Blonde for the ages

15:21, January 25

The Taylor Swift effect is real. Anything this pop icon approves of or likes sets the basic mechanics in motion: if she wears a particular designer item, it sells out almost instantly.

Some believe she helped save nothing less than the NFL. Others say she ruined everything, which is also a sure sign of her strength. Her Eras Tour gave a boost to the US economy. Experts said it could influence the 2024 presidential election, writes The Washington Post.

So we couldn't help but be intrigued by recent claims that the singer has a new favorite cocktail. Swift spent a fun night with her fellow Chiefs WAGs (players' wives and girlfriends) at the Rye Restaurant in Leawood, Kansas. Swift's drink of choice was reportedly the French Blonde cocktail, made with gin, the French aperitif Lillet, St. Germain liqueur (an American Gallic-style brand), and grapefruit juice.

“As far as we understand, this is her favorite cocktail,” the restaurant’s co-owner said.

Although this cocktail is nothing new, the author suspects that it has more modern origins—the Saint-Germain liqueur debuted only in 2007, and after that, recipes with elderberry elixir became widespread.

“Swift wasn't even of drinking age back then, but now that she's become America's tastemaker, we thought it was time to give it a try. (Look what she made us do, right?) Either way, it sounded a lot more appealing than the drink she used to say was her favorite: Diet Coke with vodka.”

The cocktail is very easy to prepare. Gin and grapefruit juice are easy to find (I went with my standard dry Beefeater for gin, but something a little more flavorful will work), but Lillet, St-Germain and lemon bitters can take a little effort to find. To quote our bartending muse: it might be worth it. Quickly shake all ingredients in a shaker with ice and pour into a glass. Ready!

“The first thing I noticed was that it was a really pretty shade of pink—not bubblegum like Barbie, but a lovely peachy shade. The flavor is complex: citrusy, thanks to the grapefruit, but also floral, thanks to both the elderflower and Lillet. It's a refreshing drink and isn't as strong as some of its cocktail brethren, thanks to its lower alcohol by volume content. I could even imagine adding sparkling water or sparkling wine to it for a festive touch.

“My only quibble with the French Blonde is that it is a little sweet, although I suspect that if I had used fresh juice instead of bottled juice, I would have found it more tart."
