Halle Berry speaks candidly about sex during menopause

21:35, February 6

Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry spoke candidly about sex during menopause. In particular, she was faced with a situation that baffled her and seriously ruined her sex life, writes Self.

Berry, 57, said she had the “best time” of her life with her partner. “I went through three divorces and finally found the right one,” she said. Then suddenly menopause hit and everything changed in the bedroom. “I’m trying to have sex, and [it’s like] there are razor blades in my vagina,” Berry recalled. “He comes to me at night with [seemingly] night, and I say: ‘Go away!’ But he’s the love of my life and I know something’s wrong.”

In addition to pain during sex, she also began experiencing brain fog, trouble sleeping, and moments of rage. Then she told her doctor: “I can’t remember why I came into the room. I'm confused all the time... I don't sleep at night. I wake up tired and think: ‘What’s happening to me?”’

Her doctor confirmed that she had entered menopause. Along with more well-known symptoms such as hot flashes and mood swings, painful sex is another fairly common occurrence. This is because during this time, levels of the hormone estrogen drop, which can cause vaginal tissue to become drier and thinner, leading to itching, burning or pain during intercourse.

But despite the initial disappointment, Berry does not let these health problems ruin her life. Menopause doesn't have to be a "death sentence," she says. “It’s not over yet,” she added. “It’s actually the beginning of a new chapter in your life.”
