A pair of skyscrapers connected by a cantilevered “skybridge” and a rooftop infinity pool will appear on the New York skyline, CNN reports.
The approximately 188m-tall towers, designed by architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), will house two hotels, while the soaring lobby at the top will house restaurants, bars, an art gallery with a glass floor (and glass ceiling), and—if licensed—underground casino.
Along with two new residential towers, the skyscrapers will frame the newly opened Freedom Plaza, a three-block public park with retail space, and a new Museum of Freedom and Democracy.
BIG founder and creative director Bjarke Ingels said the design aims to expand the green space that architects Le Corbusier, Wallace Harrison, and Oscar Niemeyer created at the nearby UN building.
The two hotel towers are planned to house the city's first five-star Banyan Tree Hotel, as well as a hotel operated by casino operator Mohegan.
A 150,000-gallon infinity pool will be built on the roof of the skybridge. BIG describes it as "one of the largest rooftop pools in North America."
Meanwhile, the 50- and 60-story residential towers are reminiscent of New York's modernist buildings of the 1950s and 1960s with their striped glass and aluminum facades. The two high-rise buildings will be connected by a podium that will house a food market and retail space.
