Patek Philippe's first self-winding wristwatch will be auctioned at Sotheby's in Hong Kong on Sunday. The first series Ref. The Patek 2526, a 36mm 18-karat gold watch with a white enamel dial, can go for between $384,000 and $770,000, thanks in part to its legendary provenance.
“Patek’s first automatic watch is a very important milestone for the brand,” Joey Luk, director and head of Sotheby’s Hong Kong watch department, told Robb Report. Patek Philippe presented the reference 2526 at the Basel Fair in Switzerland in the spring of 1953. The brand then “waited for a couple of months to see how the watch was received,” says Luk.
In the summer of 1953, the brand gave the watch to Joe Ben (J.B.) Champion, Jr., an American criminal defense lawyer in Texas whose collection of mid-century Patek Philippe watches has captivated modern collectors.
