Jane Birkin’s iconic Hermès Birkin bag is set to be exhibited at Sotheby’s Paris.

A brand new venue, Avenue Matignon, will celebrate the actress and singer’s beloved bag. An irreplaceable piece of fashion history, the very first Birkin bag given to her by Jane herself, will be on display until October 31.

It’s a unique chance to admire the holy grail of bags, distinguished from their modern counterparts by details such as the discreet use of gold metal, closed bridges inspired by the existing Hermès sac Haut à Courroies (HAC) model, and a fixed shoulder strap. Jane Birkin’s initials adorn the accessory. None of today’s Birkin bags have these unique characteristics.

For the super-rich, however, the problem with the Birkin isn’t money, it’s accessibility. But for Jane Birkin, it was all about size; she found the bags of the time too small. And imagine her delight when, after a 45-minute conversation with Jean-Louis Dumas, then CEO of Hermès, she not only found her perfect bag, but also gave permission for it to bear her name in 1985.
