A new study shows that “coolness” is a measurable trait, even if it remains somewhat subjective.

Published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General and summarized by Science Blog, the research found that people across different countries and cultures perceive “cool” individuals in remarkably similar ways.

“Cool people everywhere are seen as more extraverted, pleasure-seeking, influential, adventurous, open, and independent,” the study states.

The scientists conducted a series of experiments involving nearly 6,000 participants worldwide. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), despite cultural differences between East and West, the perception of “cool” people was surprisingly consistent.

“Everyone wants to be cool — or at least not be labeled a ‘loser,’” explained co-author Todd Pettigrew, an associate professor at the University of Chile. “Society needs cool people because they challenge norms, inspire change, and push culture forward.”

Interestingly, the researchers noted that “cool” people aren’t always the same as those considered “good.” “Good” individuals tend to be seen as more conformist, traditional, reliable, and friendly, whereas “cool” people are more often associated with rebelliousness, unconventional thinking, and independence.

“Coolness has certainly evolved over time, but in my view, it hasn’t lost its edge — it has just become more functional,” Pettigrew concluded.
