The X-Files star Gillian Anderson has decided to speak openly about her sexuality. The 58-year-old actress revealed that she identifies as pansexual and admitted that she had relationships with women when she was younger.
In an interview with The Australian, the Emmy Award-winning actress spoke about how her attitude toward her own sexuality has evolved over the years. Anderson is currently in a relationship with a man.
“When I was younger, I had relationships with women,” the actress revealed.
Pansexuality is a sexual orientation in which a person may experience attraction to others regardless of their gender identity.
Anderson admitted that she is not particularly fond of flirting herself, but said she has observed women around her age rediscovering their sensuality and sexual desire.
“I’m not a big flirt. I don’t really express that side of myself. But I hear about a lot of women around my age who are rediscovering their sensuality and their desire for sex,” she said.
According to the actress, many of these women are starting to date again, finding themselves with a wealth of new opportunities to meet people, while also receiving attention on dating apps from much younger men.
Anderson also revealed that working on Netflix’s hit series Sex Education, in which she played sex therapist and mother of the protagonist Jean Milburn, made her much more open about sex.
“It all started with that character,” the actress said.
Gillian Anderson Is Preparing a New Book About Sex
Anderson’s interview comes ahead of the release of her new book, More: Sexual Fantasies by Anonymous, which will go on sale on September 15.
The book is a follow-up to Want, which was published in 2024. Like its predecessor, the new volume is a collection of sexual fantasies submitted anonymously by readers.
The actress, who starred in The Sex Lives of College Girls, said the book features numerous stories from women who “long for tenderness” or want to be desired exactly as they are.
“It’s a complicated and very confusing world. That’s why, I think, it’s so important to continue publishing books like this. And to continue making shows like Sex Education, which have so much heart, compassion and understanding of how complicated the world is for young people, especially when they are just beginning to figure it all out. Because it really matters,” Anderson said.
She also expressed her gratitude to the contributors for their openness and courage.
“I’m so grateful to them for their courage and honesty, for this beautiful, beautiful prose. It’s a great honor for me that they entrusted me with these stories,” the actress said.
