Cryotherapy: Hollywood’s “cold” secret to youth and wellness

13:10, October 13

Cryotherapy, or cold therapy, has long been associated with sports recovery, but it’s now emerging as a popular trend in the fight against aging. Celebrities like Demi Moore, Rita Ora, and Mark Wahlberg are among its devoted fans, reports the Daily Mail.

The procedure is not for the faint of heart: just three minutes in a specialized chamber at −140°C is said to help stars “glow” and feel rejuvenated. Wahlberg is so enthusiastic about cryotherapy that he installed a personal cryo-chamber in his home.

In 2022, Rita Ora caught Australian media attention when she visited a Sydney clinic and shared a video of herself “rejuvenating her body and spirit.” The singer even combined the session with oxygen therapy for an extra boost.

Cryotherapy “tricks” the body into thinking it’s in hypothermia. This triggers a surge of adrenaline, endorphins, and anti-inflammatory proteins. The results? Boosted metabolism, increased energy, firmer skin, reduced cellulite, and up to 800 calories burned per session.

The trend is growing rapidly in Australia: the cryotherapy market reached $5.6 million in 2024 and is expected to hit $10 million by 2030. Joanna Likouresis, CEO of Cryo Stay Young Australia, calls cryotherapy “the next evolution in self-care after cold baths.”

Research by Dr. Jacopo Fontana in Italy suggests that five sessions per week for two weeks can reduce waist size by 5.6% and cholesterol levels by 20.2%.

Cryotherapy is also credited with easing migraine symptoms, arthritis pain, improving skin health, and supporting mental wellbeing, including reducing anxiety and depression, and even aiding those with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
