Forget cramps, irritability, and chocolate cravings—now, your period could give you… glowing skin. At least, that’s what proponents of the controversial new internet trend menstrual masking claim, reports the New York Post.
The practice is simple (and divisive): women apply their own menstrual blood to their faces for a few minutes before washing it off.
Supporters say menstrual blood contains stem cells, cytokines, and proteins that can “revive” the skin and boost radiance. A study by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) did find that plasma from menstrual fluid may accelerate tissue healing and support regeneration.
Some beauty enthusiasts liken menstrual masks to “vampire facials,” which gained fame after Kim Kardashian shared her experience with PRP facelifts—procedures that use platelet-rich plasma from a patient’s blood to stimulate collagen production.
However, dermatologists caution that menstrual blood is not sterile plasma. It can contain bacteria, fungi, staphylococcus, and even sexually transmitted infections. Applying it to the skin can lead to irritation, inflammation, or infection.
Given the lack of scientific evidence and potential health risks, experts strongly advise keeping menstrual blood where it belongs… in the toilet, not on your face.
