A Silicon Valley startup is giving a whole new meaning to vacation planning, offering bookings for a planned hotel on the Moon — with prices ranging from $250,000 to $1 million per guest.
GRU Space aims to build a permanent lunar outpost by 2032, with testing and early construction scheduled for 2029, according to NYP.
The first lunar habitats will be inflatable and accommodate up to four guests for multi-day stays. Visitors will be able to enjoy moonwalks, lunar driving, and even golf, with the initial hotel designed to last a decade, the company says.
Future structures will be reinforced with lunar materials and host up to ten guests. Eventually, they plan to replace them with more grandiose buildings, such as a brick structure inspired by San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts.
"We need to really aim for the literal Moon," said Skyler Chan, 22, founder of GRU Space, to The Observer.
But the hotel isn’t just a playground for wealthy tourists — at least on paper. It is presented as a step toward humanity’s future beyond Earth, reflecting a growing belief in tech circles that civilization’s future includes “off-world addresses.”
According to Chan, governments and ultra-wealthy-funded companies currently control space, and he hopes that off-Earth tourism could help stimulate the space economy.
"Lunar tourism is the best first wedge to spin up the lunar economy," he said.
In addition to the eye-watering cost of a stay, getting there will make the trip even more expensive.
The company notes on its reservation site: “Final pricing has not yet been determined, but will likely exceed $10 million.”
Prospective guests must pay a non-refundable $1,000 application fee and undergo a background check, including medical and financial documentation.
Review of applications by the company is scheduled for this year.
