Sotheby’s Paris is preparing to auction off more than 1,000 previously unreleased personal sketches from the family archive of the late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld. The massive online auction will run from July 2 to July 8. Bidding will be open to the general public with no reserve price, and opening bids start at just €1. Concurrently, a public exhibition showcasing the works will run in the French capital until July 7, Hypebeast reports.

The impressive collection features historic drawings dating back to the 1970s. Many of these working documents and satirical political illustrations remained strictly confidential during the lifetime of the creative director, who passed away in 2019, leaving behind an unprecedented personal archive. Lagerfeld was renowned for his voracious collecting habits, which spanned various eras of art and design. He famously spent fortunes decorating his numerous homes in an opulent Ancien Régime style before pivoting sharply toward raw minimalism in the early 2000s.

The upcoming event marks the sixth dedicated auction organized by Sotheby’s as part of the sale of the couturier’s estate. Previous sessions were successfully held across major European cultural hubs, including Paris, Cologne, and Monaco. Sotheby’s is billing this presentation as the final release of items from the master's personal domain. The accessibility of these vivid, hand-colored illustrations offers a rare glimpse into his rapid creative process, at a time when the global art market consistently shows colossal interest in any physical artifacts tied to the designer's name.

Beyond traditional graphic works on paper, the new catalog shines a light on some of Lagerfeld's highly specific lifestyle habits. Among the lots are his signature fingerless gloves, alongside a staggering collection of approximately 200 iPods. The designer notoriously used the portable devices to meticulously categorize musical genres and curate soundtracks for his grand runway shows.

Lagerfeld’s whimsical sketches and personal effects continue to carry immense cultural weight. Similar drawings were recently exhibited alongside finished haute couture garments during the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s massive 2023 retrospective in New York. The upcoming summer auction will represent the final opportunity for fashion enthusiasts to acquire a tangible piece of the legendary designer's legacy.
