The highly anticipated return of House of the Dragon was supposed to be the ultimate triumph of the summer television season. Instead, the series has been hit by a wave of harsh criticism and fandom civil wars before audiences have even properly dug into the new episodes.

While die-hard fans are eagerly waiting to see the plot unfold, a radical faction of the fandom is actively calling for a total boycott of Season 3. Professional critics have only added fuel to the fire following a private advanced screening, admitting that one particular scene made them feel "literally, physically sick."

Season 3 sees the return of its star-studded ensemble cast, including Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Steve Toussaint, Rhys Ifans, and Fabien Frankel. According to HBO's rollout plan, the season consists of eight episodes airing weekly. However, the project's reputation has already taken a hit following the first wave of reviews.

One reviewer revealed that the first four episodes contain a specific moment that "disgusted her," causing the entire theater during the press screening to "gasp in horror simultaneously."

"House of the Dragon has never been afraid to push the envelope. In the series premiere, there was that tragic birth scene that still stands as one of the most nightmarish moments on television. In Season 2, Daemon Targaryen [Matt Smith] slept with his mother in a hallucinatory Harrenhal dream. But this new, vomit-inducing moment seems to completely top them all," wrote Sabrina Barr, a critic for Metro.

The Fandom Revolt

The roots of the fan rebellion trace back to August 2024, when the second season drew to a close. The 70-minute finale, titled "The Queen Who Ever Was," left viewers deeply disappointed. Game of Thrones fans, accustomed to epic, large-scale battles in season finales, were instead left with what felt like a glorified teaser for the future.

The entirety of Season 2 was dominated by the anticipation of war, yet audiences never got to see any actual, spectacular battles.

The finale triggered a storm of online outrage. "WHERE IS THE REST OF THE EPISODE????" infuriated users wrote on social media, attaching memes of crying cats captioned "Crying in High Valyrian."

Now, disillusioned fans are declaring that they will skip Season 3 on principle. However, the latest trailer—teasing brutal clashes and soldiers being burned alive—has successfully intrigued a portion of the audience. "Now that's more like it. This season looks way more epic than the second," optimists write in the YouTube comments section.
