For millions of women, the sudden, overwhelming urge to polish off a tub of ice cream or demolish a bag of potato chips often feels inexplicable. However, a new study suggests that a culprit behind these cravings might be a common medication that many women carry in their purses every single day.
Scientists have discovered that women are significantly more likely to experience episodes of binge eating on specific days. Surprisingly, the blame didn't lie with stress, poor mood, or other medications, but rather with combined oral contraceptives (COCs), more commonly known as birth control pills, according to a study published in the journal JAMA.
Data shows that combined pills are the most popular form of hormonal contraception, with up to 85% of women taking them at some point in their lives.
Researchers from Michigan State University continuously monitored 422 women aged 15 to 30 over a period of 49 days (roughly equivalent to two menstrual cycles). Each day, the participants recorded:
Exactly which pill from the pack they took—the active pill (containing hormones) or the inactive pill (the dummy/placebo).
Their emotional states and any episodes of overeating.
The frequency of binge eating episodes spiked drastically on the exact days the women took their active hormonal pills. Conversely, when it was time for the "dummy" placebos, the intense food cravings subsided.
Remarkably, this link remained completely unchanged even when researchers factored in low mood, PMS, or the use of other medications. Furthermore, the pills did not appear to have any impact on the participants' overall preoccupation with their body weight.
During the experiment, scientists noticed another intriguing detail: as the participants continued to log their daily eating habits, the total number of binge eating episodes began to decline across the board.
This suggests that simply tracking one's behavior helps women become more aware of their personal triggers, allowing them to regain a sense of control over their appetite.
A Note on the Findings: There is absolutely no need to throw away your usual contraception just yet. Scientists emphasize that this is the first large-scale study of its kind to evaluate day-to-day changes in appetite, and the results are currently considered preliminary. While hormones can influence our eating behavior, they do not entirely dictate it.
Keep a Food Diary: Track what you eat alongside the specific day of your pill cycle. This will help you spot clear patterns.
Revamp Your Diet: Focus on whole foods, and incorporate more protein and fiber into your meals, which help sustain feelings of fullness for longer.
Stay Active: Regular physical activity helps stabilize blood sugar levels and naturally lowers stress.
Consult with Your Doctor: Every woman's body is unique. If side effects are disrupting your quality of life, a gynecologist can help you find an alternative method of contraception.
