Amal Clooney has opened up in detail for the first time about how her career and personal life shifted following her marriage to one of Hollywood’s most notorious bachelors.

Before meeting George Clooney, the 48-year-old Amal was already a highly accomplished international human rights lawyer. Following their 2014 wedding, she continued her advocacy work, co-founding the Clooney Foundation for Justice with her husband in 2016. However, her routine underwent a radical change after the couple welcomed twins, Alexander and Ella, in 2017—who are now 9 years old.

"Before, my work and my personal life existed separately; they were completely different, and I managed not to mix them. But after marriage, everything changed," Amal shared during her speech at the Cartier Dialogues event in Bangkok. "At first, I was very worried about being perceived one-dimensionally by the public. I thought, 'Okay, I can't wear this dress or do that, because on Monday I have to stand before a judge.'"

Over time, however, the human rights lawyer managed to find her balance and set her priorities straight.

"Ultimately, that's not as important as just living your life. If you are a professional in your field, it will become obvious anyway. I didn't let the publicity get in the way of what's important for my family and my relationship with my husband. It used to be easier for me because I could control the level of attention myself. But here, I had to learn to navigate new territory," she added.

Through their foundation, Amal and George provide legal aid to girls and women in developing nations across Africa and around the globe. They place a special focus on Malawi, where, according to Amal, one in ten girls under the age of 15 is forced into marriage, despite the fact that there are only about 800 lawyers in the entire country.

Redefining the Rules of Engagement

Amal used to fly regularly to some of the most dangerous places on earth for her work. However, George Clooney admitted that after the birth of their children, the couple had to temper their zeal.

"You can't take risks the way you used to," the actor shared. "Both Amal and I had to re-evaluate our goals and travel geography. I used to love going to dangerous places. I gladly went to the Nuba Mountains, Darfur, Abyei—right into war zones. It gave me a massive adrenaline rush."

Amal's past experience was no less extreme.

"Amal spent two years living in a bunker in Beirut while handling court cases. But as soon as we had children, we made a conscious decision not to take those kinds of risks anymore. We had to change the rules of the game," Clooney concluded.
