"I Dream of a Rich Husband So I Never Have to Work": 20-Year-Old Gen Zer Sparks Backlash After Viral Post

21:33, July 20

Gender stereotypes have come a long way, but that doesn't mean every woman in 2026 is dreaming of climbing the corporate ladder. Some are perfectly content to give up their professional ambitions, marry a wealthy man, and never work another day in their lives, NYP reports.

In the r/GirlDinnerDiaries forum on Reddit, a 20-year-old student confessed that while she used to be ambitious and was studying to become a dentist, she recently underwent a massive shift in mindset. The young woman decided that life is far too short to spend it stressed out and working.

Her new plan? Ditch her studies, find a wealthy partner, and live a life of luxury.

"Until I turned 19, I was very ambitious and passion-driven: I wanted to establish a stable career and become financially independent as soon as possible. But in the last two years of my life, I've experienced a sudden and dynamic shift in my way of thinking and being," the original poster wrote.

"I've realized that it's quite literally impossible for me to achieve all the things I wish to, at least in this lifetime alone. My time here is limited. I can't build a career, buy a house, afford basic necessities, travel the world, buy designer, and do as I please while also being under 30. Those things take a lifetime."

"Trading a Hectic Job for Comfort"

Having reached this epiphany, the Gen Zer declared that her new main goal is to marry rich, have kids, and "do as I please without working ever again."

She showed a degree of self-awareness, acknowledging that her future husband might want to control her—especially financially.

"Trade a hectic, tedious working job for a more traditional one to ensure comfort and ease of living," she summarized.

"If He Can Feed You, He Can Starve You": Online Backlash

The post caused quite a stir online, drawing sharp criticism from both working women and stay-at-home mothers who know firsthand that giving up financial independence for a man is a dangerous gamble.

  • On the toxic mindset:

"This is easily one of the most toxic mindsets you can have for yourself. It’s a one-way ticket to depression and regret for the rest of your life. Nothing more dangerous than wanting everything without having to put in any effort."

  • On the "tradwife" trap and parenting:

"Said with love, you’re pissing me off. Respectfully, you sound your age. That’s ok! But don’t fall into the trap of 'marriage and kids fix things somehow.' Kids are the hardest thing you’ll ever do in your damn life. They don’t make life softer or easier. And being entirely beholden to a man who could tear away your whole life at any time sure as HELL isn’t easy. You are falling trap to tradwife messaging..."

  • On harsh realities:

"If he can feed you, he can starve you," one disgruntled commenter bluntly added.

  • On financial risks:

"The only person limiting you is you. Dentists make an incredible amount of money. What you are considering is possible, but a risky gambit. What if you find a very wealthy man who wants to settle down with you, and then he decides he’s no longer in love with you and leaves you with nothing? You’ve been on some nice vacations and have some nice clothes, but then kids to take care of and no skills to provide for yourself."
