70-year-old Hollywood actor and director Mel Gibson has stated that he remains committed to completing work on the long-awaited blockbuster Lethal Weapon 5. In a recent interview with Collider, he revealed that the script is already fully completed, but the project is currently stuck in administrative limbo.
The franchise's original director, Richard Donner, passed away in 2021 at the age of 91, having already begun work on the fifth installment. According to Gibson, before his death, Donner asked him to take over the directorial reins if he himself could not finish the film. Other members of the team later confirmed this request.
Gibson, along with screenwriter Richard Wenk, refined the text guided by the principle: "What would Donner do?" The actor is confident that the new script surpasses all previous installments of the franchise:
"We refined it with the mindset of: 'What would Donner do?' And I think the fifth script turned out better than all the rest. But it’s stuck in some kind of industrial cinematic hell that they just can’t seem to pull it out of."
Gibson lifted the veil on the plot, emphasizing that the film will focus primarily on characters rather than massive destruction. The movie will not be overloaded with CGI and massive explosions; in spirit, it will be an intimate yet energetic story with an emphasis on human relationships and the deep vulnerabilities of the main characters.
Despite bureaucratic difficulties in Hollywood, Mel Gibson has not given up hope of giving audiences the final chapter of the legendary action franchise.
